G

Gametes

A reproductive cell specialized for fertilization, having the haploid number of chromosomes - a mature pollen grain or ovule capable of fusing with a gamete of the opposite sex to produce the embryo.

Ganja

Another widely-accepted name for cannabis. The term ganja is often attributed to Rastafarian culture, but it is in fact the Hindi word for hemp, introduced to Jamaica by Indian indentured servants. Lately, its usage in western society has become incredibly mainstream.

Gasper

A term for a hand-rolled joint or cigarette. It's an older term, usually used by older generations, but it references the sensation that you're gasping for breath after taking a particularly large hit off a joint, spliff, or cigarette. It usually refers to something rolled with particularly cheap and/or low-quality product.

Gene

Part of a chromosome that influences the development and the potency of a cannabis plant - genes are inherited through sexual propagation.

Gene Pool

Collection of possible gene combinations in an available population.

Genetic Makeup

The genes inherited from parent cannabis plants - genetic makeup is the most important factor dictating vigor and potency.

Genotype

The specific genetic makeup of an individual, which determines the physical appearance of that individual cannabis plant.

Germination

It is the process by which a cannabis plant grows from a seed. Environmental conditions like warmth, moisture, and air trigger the root that is curled up inside the seed to sprout in search of more moisture. Growing mediums that are too soggy will cut off the oxygen supplies making the seeds to drown. Well-nurtured cannabis seeds germinate within 2 to 7 days.

Germplasm

The sum total of the genetic or hereditary materials in a species.

Gibberellin

A class of cannabis plant growth hormone used to promote stem elongation - gibberellic acid is a form of gibberellin.

Girdling

Removing a strip of bark or crushing the stem of a cannabis plant - girdling limits the flow of nutrients, water, and plant products, which can kill the plant.

Glandular Trichome

A cannabis plant hair gland which secretes resin.

Glass

Glass is the material most commonly used when smoking cannabis out of a pipe. Glass pipes can vary in color and size and can be decorated with unique designs and patterns. Glass pipes can cost quite a lot of money and sometimes break easily, but are considered much more desirable than metal pipes, which can get uncomfortably hot and give extremely harsh hits, or wooden pipes, which will not last as long and can get permanently stained with an unpleasant flavor.

Green

Another popular slang term for cannabis, the name 'green' is often used as a sort of code.

Green Crack

Although it’s just cannabis, this strain gets its name from its keen potency. There are currently two types of Green Crack - the Sativa-dominant strain comes from Skunk #1, while the Indica-dominant one is purported to be derived from an Afghani Indica.

Green Lacewing

Insect that preys on aphids, thrips, whiteflies, etc. and their larva and offspring.

Green Out

When someone smokes too much cannabis and gets way too high. Roughly equivalent to blacking out, except with cannabis instead of liquor. Most often the person who has greened out will become very quiet. In some situations, they may even vomit. If it’s bad enough, the person who has greened out might fall asleep and wake up high the next day. Generally not a good experience, though it does wear off after a while.

Greenhouse

A heated structure with transparent or translucent walls and ceiling which offer some environmental control to promote cannabis plant growth.

Grinder

This refers to a device that is used to break down cannabis buds to create a fine texture, so it burns evenly for better airflow and trichome exposure. A grinder has two halves with pegs aligned systematically to ensure the plant material is shredded effectively when turned. Grinders come in various types of materials like metal, acrylic, aluminum or wood. They are available in different shapes and sizes with the cylindrical shape being the most common.

Guano

Dung from birds, high in organic nutrients - seabird guano is noted for being high in nitrogen, and bat guano is high in phosphorus.

Gynoecious

An individual cannabis plant having all pistillate flowers - in reference to a population, all-female.
